We have over 500 visiting tutors supporting the teaching and assessment of the 1000s of students undertaking their studies with Edinburgh Surgery Online. We could not deliver our programmes without the commitment of our many wonderful tutors, many of whom have been with Edinburgh Surgery Online for a number of years now. We are also very proud to say that many of our graduates subsequently return to tutor on the programme, often then becoming course leads themselves in their subject specialism. While many of our tutors are surgeons (which you might expect given our name!), we also have oncologists, ophthalmologists, other human healthcare workers and even veterinary professionals involved with the training of our students. We pick the best person to teach the content on a given course, and our programmes now span surgical, ophthalmological, academic writing, and patient safety courses and target a wide range of healthcare professionals. That best person could be YOU so please get in touch if you would like to become part of the Edinburgh Surgery Online tutoring team and contribute to the futures of the next generation of surgical and healthcare leaders. What does tutoring involve? Each of our programmes is unique so this will partly depend upon the programme that you are interested in joining. Typically, roles can include: Creating content for the courses (case scenarios, clinical questions, pre-recorded or live sessions) Facilitating clinical discussions via our discussion boards and marking student contributions Supervising dissertation students Marking dissertations, reflective portfolios of competencies, and other summative assessments Assessment development (preparing Single Best Answer MCQ questions) Opportunity dependent, more experienced tutors can progress to becoming: Section or course leads Year Director Programme Director So, what can Edinburgh Surgery Online offer prospective tutors in return for your involvement? Typically, visiting tutors will receive: An annual payment An annual CPD certificate and (for most roles) CPD points Visiting tutor status at the University of Edinburgh Access to our online library resources, databases, and online journals, e-books and other resources Opportunity to achieve Associate Fellowship status of Advance HE for longer term tutors Other resources as needed to as part of the role undertaken A fresh perspective from working with enthusiastic and diverse international students Which programmes are currently looking for tutors? We are always keen to hear from prospective new tutors. Even if we do not have vacancies today, we are keen to hear how you could enhance the educational experience of our students.
