Catch up on how our students have been getting on My Journey Through the ChM Urology Programme -Dr Satyendra Singh, India Image Dr Satyendra Singh I am very pleased to write this blog about embarking on the ChM Urology programme at the University of Edinburgh. It has been a transformative experience in my career as a urologist. This journey, marked by rigorous academic and research training and practical exposure, has significantly enhanced my professional competence and broadened my horizons within the field of urology. The ChM Urology programme at the University of Edinburgh is renowned for its comprehensive curriculum, which seamlessly integrates theoretical knowledge with clinical practice. As a student, I was immediately struck by the depth and breadth of the coursework, which covers all aspects of urology, from basic science to the latest advancements in surgical techniques and patient care. The programmes commitment to academic excellence is evident in every aspect of the curriculum, ensuring that students are well-prepared to meet the challenges of modern medical advancements. I am very much an academic learner and always enjoy doing something new in the field of urology. I studied 2-3 hrs daily or even more to complete this program. At the end of the programme I am habitual of doing some new things daily. I write review articles, case reports, and e-posters for conferences. Tutors and mentors at the university are very experienced and supportive. A pivotal figure in my educational journey has been Louise Buckley, the deputy programme director and cohort lead. Her role has been instrumental in shaping my approach and a gripping peer interaction immensely helped. Louise’s dedication to student success is unparalleled; she combines academic rigor with a deep understanding of the individual needs of each student. One of Louise’s greatest strengths is her ability to create a supportive learning environment. The ChM Urology programmes structure is designed to ensure that students gain both academic and clinical proficiency. This approach allows for flexibility, enabling me to balance my studies with my clinical responsibilities. The programmes emphasis on evidence-based practice has been particularly valuable. Through critical appraisal of current research and participation in clinical audits, I have developed a keen ability to evaluate and implement best practices in patient care. This focus on evidence-based medicine ensures that we, as students are not only skilled practitioners but also innovators who contribute to advancing urology. The journey through the ChM Urology programme has been as much about personal growth as it has been about professional development. The rigorous academic environment has honed my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while the clinical components have enhanced my practical abilities and patient interaction skills. Moreover, the international aspect of the programme has enriched my learning experience. This global network will undoubtedly be an invaluable resource as I advance in my career. Reflecting on my journey, I can confidently say that the ChM Urology programme at the University of Edinburgh has been an exceptional and enriching experience. As I move forward in my career, I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences that this programme has provided, and I am excited to contribute to the field of urology with the expertise I have gained. We are delighted to share that ChM Urology graduate, Chris Evans, has just had his final project published in BMC Women’s Health. Chris, who graduated in 2022 and was awarded the Henry Wade Medal for being the highest achieving student of his cohort, undertook a systematic review examining ‘The impact of pharmacotherapy on sexual function in female patients being treated for idiopathic overactive bladder’. The paper is available Open Access (see link below). CJ Shukla, Programme Director of ChM Urology, commented: “we are always keen to encourage our students to produce research of publishable quality and to disseminate their findings through conferences and peer-reviewed publications. Chris is a stellar example of the success our students can, and do, achieve”. We are pleased to say that Chris currently tutors on the Core Academic Activity course. There he plays a key role in supporting advanced trainee urologists to understand critical appraisal of the scientific literature and to develop other non-technical skills for surgeons.
