We have a rich tradition within Edinburgh Surgery Online of recruiting graduates of our programmes once they have gained additional professional experience to contribute to the teaching and research supervision of current students. This is a tradition that we have continued to foster within ChM Urology, and we currently have six graduates of our programme supporting the learning of the next generation of consultant urologists. Image So, the CHM Urology academic team were particularly delighted when Musliu Tolani was proposed by a current student, Lovely Fidelis, to be the primary supervisor of their research project. Musliu was one of our higher achieving students who graduated with a distinction in 2022 having aced almost every assessment with a “A”, so I knew that Lovely would be in safe hands! Musliu, who is a consultant urologist based in Nigeria, published an article in Urology News on ‘practicing urology in Nigeria’ during studies, and upon graduation, rapidly set to work publishing his Specialist Academic Activity research project in peer reviewed journals. His literature review ‘Penile Trauma Burden and Aetiology in the Paediatric and Adult Population: A Scoping Review and Critical Analysis of the Literature’ was published in the Journal of West African College of Surgeons, and he has another paper under review from this project! Since graduating, Musliu has continued to be research active. He recently completed a study on utilizing an implementation science approach to develop a systems strengthening intervention for prostate cancer management in Nigeria through the PCF health equity challenge award. He is currently undertaking research on the development, validation and health system preparedness of the health leads social needs screening tool for prostate cancer patients in Nigeria through the 2023 ASCO LIFe Award. This is the second time Musliu has received funding from this prestigious organisation. We asked Musliu to tell us more about how he felt his ChM Urology studies have contributed to his professional success. He had this to say: ““The ChM program helped answer clinical questions that I had always yearned to solve through the practical approach of case-based discussion and use of supporting evidence. What I did not expect to get from the course was the pastoral support of a tutor and a platform to hone my skill in academic writing. Without doubt, I utilize elements of the knowledge gained in my daily practice and research projects” The ChM Urology programme team are delighted to have been able to support Musliu on his professional journey and look forward to retaining that association and him supporting more students on their ChM Urology journey.
