Jillian is an optometrist who benefited from access to retinal imaging technologies throughout her optometry training. Image Advances in retinal imaging technologies have helped to innovate the way that eye care professionals in Scotland are trained. We spoke to Jillian, an Optometrist who graduated in 2018 and recently completed her independent prescribing (IP) training, about her experience with retinal imaging technologies throughout her training. “I was exposed to different retinal images throughout my optometry training, through university lectures and through using retinal imaging technologies on patients in the university eye clinic. Being able to see real-life retinal images during my optometry training was invaluable, as it showed me what different eye diseases ‘actually look like’ in the real world. It helped to solidify the theory I learned during my training, and to put it into practice as I transitioned from student to qualified eye care practitioner. "As an Optometrist in practice, the retinal imaging technology I use helps to give me confidence when diagnosing eye conditions, and helps me to make decisions about treatment and referral which will ensure my patients have the best possible clinical outcome. "The SCONe project sounds like a great way to provide future optometry students with a really rich educational resource which will help to support them through their training and get them ready for optometric practice.” This article was published on 2024-08-22
