Micro CT

In the department of Orthopaedics and Trauma research laboratories we are equipped with a Bruker-1172 Micro computed tomography (microCT) machine. This device uses high resolution x-ray imaging to construct a detailed three-dimensional visualisation of an object, enabling the internal structure of an object to be determined non-destructively. An object, of maximum dimensions 50mm diameter and 70mm high, is placed on a central platform and rotated while multiple images are acquired. Resolution ranges from 1 – 34 µm per voxel.

Analysis software available in house allows for quantitative analysis of morphometric parameters, giving information on; total volume, object volume, volume and surface ratios, structural model index, structure thickness and separation and the degree of anisotropy.

Output files can be used to created detailed models for further simulation or made into a scaled model for demonstration purposes by additive manufacture.

Timelapse Microscopy

Time-lapse imaging is applicable to any microscopy technique used to image dynamic events.

Our Department is equipped with a Nikon TE2000U inverted fluorescent microscope and a controlled and monitored incubator/imaging environment to reduce disturbance to cells and preserve cell health. This is operated using NIS Elements Advanced Research software for timelapse imaging of live cells in brightfield and phase or fluorescence.

DS-Fi3 + L4 Microscope camera

The Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma is equipped with the latest digital Nikon microscope camera and control unit.

The DS-Fi3 camera is drastically improved with high resolution colour imaging (5.9 megapixel CMOS sensor), high sensitivity and low noise (sensitivities between ISO 50 and ISO 3200), high speed live display (30 fps) and excellent colour reproducibility.

The compact DS-L4 tablet control unit is optimised for ease of use, offering space saving and remote access solutions, and enabling the user to easily configure and control the DS-Fi3.
