RI Stirling Bequest Fund

The R.I. Stirling Bequest Fund was established to support the education and training of orthopaedic surgeons, trainees, and students associated with the University of Edinburgh. The fund enables these individuals to travel abroad for further training, study, or research in orthopaedic surgery.

Purpose

The primary aim of the R.I. Stirling Bequest Fund is to fund international educational and training opportunities that enhance the professional skills of orthopaedic surgeons, trainees, and students. The funding supports:

  1. Fellowships for trainees
  2. Attendance at international meetings to present papers
  3. Other international educational activities that bring benefits to Edinburgh Orthopaedics and the applicants themselves.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a professional medical connection to the University of Edinburgh Orthopaedics Department.

Applications are prioritised based on several criteria within the available annual budget:

Higher Priority: Lower Priority:
Applications from trainees Poster presentations, especially if previously presented
Projects that benefit Edinburgh Applications from previous award holders
Activities enhancing the applicant's expertise Applicants without a report on a past award
New podium presentations Retrospective applications
Fellowships at internationally recognised institutions Applications unlikely to benefit Edinburgh or from outside Edinburgh
Students presenting their orthopaedic projects

Award Details

The R.I. Stirling Bequest Fund covers specific costs associated with educational and professional development activities:

Trainees and Orthopaedic Surgeons: Economy class air travel and a subsistence allowance of £120 per day.

Students: Up to £750.

Fellowship Awards: Up to £5000 per annum on a pro rata basis, plus 10% per dependent family member.

 

Additional costs, such as car hire, are not funded. All expenses must be supported by receipts.

Application PRocess

1. Complete the Application Form: Applicants must detail the proposed project and its benefits.

2. Submit the Application: Send the completed form via email to DCS.RIStirlingBequest@ed.ac.uk.

3. Committee Review: The committee review the applications via emails.
