Year 1 Certificate courses

You will study a wide range of specialties in Fundamentals in Paediatric Medicine. Year 1 provides the basis for recognition of generic emergency situations in children. Basic physiology, pathophysiology and elements of therapy are introduced with topics including the anatomy, physiology and function of different clinical systems (for example, airway, respiratory, cardiac, renal, GI and upper/lower limbs). The year finishes with an exploration of ethical issues, child protection and paediatric resuscitation.

Year 2 Diploma courses

In Year 2, students will begin by studying a core course in Paediatric Medical Emergencies which will develop experience in disease management and critical appraisal. Students will then have the choice of embarking on courses in a Paediatric Emergency Medicine (surgical specialties, trauma, self-selected additional topics) or Paediatric Critical Care Medicine pathway. This latter option is designed to increase knowledge and expertise for those who wish to work (or are working in) paediatric high dependency, paediatric transport medicine, or who aspire to a later career in paediatric intensive care.

Year 3 Masters courses

In the final year of the programme, students will study Management Issues in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.  This course introduces key skills required of senior clinicians, including leadership, departmental management and group/committee work.  Key areas of group work will include surge demand, risk management, change management and data management.

Students will also choose from one of the following optional courses:

  • Written Reflective Element
  • Advancing Special Interests in Paediatric Emergency or Critical Care Medicine

For the Written Reflective Element, students will complete a dissertation (literature review or brief literature review plus audit) in their chosen area, and produce an abstract and poster on a focused aspect of their academic work.  Previous topics have included major incident management in children, triage in developing nations, toxicology (organophosphate poisoning), injury prevention and sepsis.

In the Advancing Special Interests in Paediatric Emergency or Critical Care Medicine course, students will develop 2 project proposals (service evaluation and local engagement) in their chosen areas of special interest and complete written work, presentations and a reflective report.
