21 Feb 18. New staff - Lizzie Hill

Welcome to Dr Lizzie Hill who recently joined the Centre for Clinical Brain Science (CCBS) as a Sleep Research Fellow.

Main research 

Dr Lizzie Hill is working on a study investigating small vessel disease in adults with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in collaboration with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, part of the Fondation Leducq Transatlantic Network of Excellence led by Prof Joanna Wardlaw.

Participants will undergo MRI scanning at Edinburgh Imaging Facility RIE to assess small vessel disease before and after 4 months of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for OSA, along with measures of cognitive function and sleep.

I’m delighted to join Joanna and the team working on this exciting project. This is my first foray into neuroimaging, with my experience to date being in sleep medicine, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead!

Life before Edinburgh Imaging?

Having trained in the Department of Sleep Medicine, RIE alongside Dr Renata Riha (a PI on the Leducq study), Lizzie gained her PhD at the University of Edinburgh, examining prevalence and treatment of OSA in adults with Downs syndrome.

Alongside her post at CCBS, Lizzie is a Clinical Physiologist at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, and a NRS Career Research Fellow.

Research interests

Lizzie is active within the sleep community, with a particular interest in training and education.

She is President of the European Society of Sleep Technologists, a member of the European Sleep Research Society exam subcommittee, and part of the British Sleep Society Executive Committee.

Outside interests

Outside interests include yoga, music festivals, campervanning and craft beer.
