Dr Sarah Taylor, from the equine orthopaedic & diagnostic imaging teams at the The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (RDSVS) tapped into Edinburgh Imaging’s Dr Lucy Kershaw MR physics knowledge, to enhance MR imaging of the equine fetlock.

In a project funded by the Horseracing Betting Levy Board, the specific technique of MR spectroscopy is being applied to the assessment of fractures.

The team at the Large Animal Research Imaging Facility (LARIF) used its new 3T Siemens Skyra MR scanner to image seventeen cadaver limbs. Scanning aims to determine the reliability & repeatability of this imaging technique in comparison to histology.

Looking to the future, Edinburgh Imaging & the equine orthopaedic & diagnostic imaging teams will build upon this collaboration. Their combined skills & knowledge base will further elucidate changes that occur earlier in the course of palmar osteochondral disease, a condition encountered in more than 50% of racing thoroughbreds.
