Recently, STV visited the Edinburgh Imaging Facility RIE to film for the STV Scotland Tonight dementia special, where interviewers spoke with Professor Joanna Wardlaw about dementia research in Edinburgh. Image Study participant in the MR scanner at the Edinburgh Imaging Facility RIE. On the 21st April 2022, a STV Scotland Tonight dementia special aired, presented by Kaye Nicolson. The special featured various University of Edinburgh researchers, including Professor Joanna Wardlaw, Professor of Applied Neuroimaging. During the special, Professor Wardlaw discussed how, by scanning the brain, you are not able to see blood vessels. Therefore, researchers hope that studying blood vessels at the back of the eye, will give insight into what is actually happening to blood vessels in the brain. Professor Wardlaw is leading a new study involving magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and retinal imaging, funded by the Alan Turing Institute and British Heart Foundation. The special also interviewed a study participant, whose blood vessels at the back of the eye were studied. We see the participant having a retinal scan and an MR scan at the Edinburgh Imaging Facility RIE.
