Dr Andrew Chapman, ECAT Clinical Lecturer at the Centre for Cardiovascular Science was awarded the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) Young Investigator of the Year award, for “Determining the Mechanism of Myocardial Injury and Role of Coronary Disease in Type 2 Myocardial Infarction (DEMAND-MI): A Prospective Cohort Study”.

Dr Chapman received this award at the recent BCIS Advanced Cardiovascular Intervention, where he gave a presentation on the DEMAND-MI study.

DEMAND-MI is a prospective observational cohort study in which patients with a clinical diagnosis of type 2 myocardial infarction were studied using advanced cardiac imaging. The team aimed to identify untreated coronary or structural heart disease which they thought might be contributing to increased cardiovascular risk.

The team identified coronary artery disease in two thirds of patients and evidence of heart muscle weakness in one third. These conditions were previously unrecognised in the majority and most were not on treatment. This study has led to funding for a randomised controlled trial to determine if we can improve patient outcomes by targeting these underlying conditions.

We asked Dr Chapman his thoughts on receiving the award.

“I was delighted to receive the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society Young Investigator Award for the DEMAND-MI study. This award is the result of fantastic collaborative effort from colleagues across the Centre for Cardiovascular Science, Edinburgh Imaging and clinical colleagues from the Edinburgh Heart Centre, in particular the Cardiac Catheterisation Labs.

We are grateful to the British Heart Foundation for their support in funding research in this important condition. We have since obtained funding from the Chief Scientist Office to deliver a randomised controlled trial with the aim of improving patient outcomes, and hope to deliver the pilot phase of this study in the next 18 months."

Dr Andrew Chapman has also collaborated with the Edinburgh Imaging Academy in the creation of DEMAND-MI Cases, an educational resource to provide an overview of the clinical presentation and imaging findings in patients with type 2 myocardial infarction.

The DEMAND-MI Cases training tool officially launched in May 2021 and had been gradually populated with interactive cases.

As of now, the first 20 cases are live and accessible for users to review.

Registration is free and the database will be populated each week with more cases, until the full 100 cases are live.

Find out more about the DEMAND-MI Cases educational resource and how to register, here.
