Edinburgh receives two awards at the European Society of Cardiology Congress. Each year the immediate Past President of the European Society of Cardiology invites the ESC constituent bodies (Associations, Working Groups, Council, National Societies) and its Past Presidents to submit names for candidates for the annual ESC gold medal and special lectures. The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) select recipients they believe are renowned scientists who, through original contributions and qualified investigation, are accepted by their peers as leading experts in their fields of knowledge. We are delighted that at the ESC Congress in August 2018, our Professor David Newby was awarded The Rene Laennec prize for Clinical Cardiology and presented his lecture on Cardiovascular imaging for the future: it’s chalk and cheese. David is British Heart Foundation (BHF) John Wheatley Chair of Cardiology at the University of Edinburgh, a Director of Edinburgh Imaging Facilities and a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. It is traditional that at the ESC Congress young investigators are selected to compete in front of a jury during the Young Investigators Awards Sessions. Many congratulations go to our Dr Timothy Cartlidge who was awarded the Young Investigator Award Valvular Heart Disease for the outstanding quality of his research; 18F-Fluoride PET-CT in the detection of early bioprosthetic valve degeneration. Congratulations to all our Edinburgh staff who were involved in supporting David and Tim in carrying out the research that enabled them to receive both of the awards named above.
