08 Apr 25. Theirworld Edinburgh Birth Cohort

Professor James Boardman, Principal Investigator for the Theirworld Edinburgh Birth Cohort, welcomed Gordon & Sarah Brown to the university.

Gordon Brown, the former prime minister and chancellor, plus his wife, Sarah Brown were devastated in 2002 when their daughter Jennifer Brown died days after her birth.

Sarah wanted to know about the causes and consequences of premature birth and the couple set up the Jennifer Brown Research laboratory in 2004, based at the university.

For the past decade, Theirworld Edinburgh Birth Cohort has been a key part of the research laboratory's work.

It is recording the progress of 400 children from birth to adulthood and aims to provide insights into the long-term effects of premature birth on the developing brain.
