Edinburgh Imaging research awarded the Journal of the American College of Cardiology 2021 Parmley Prize. Image Dr Evangelos Tzolos, BHF Clinical Research Fellow The Parmley Prize recognises two outstanding papers published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) by primary authors who are young investigators. At this year’s American College of Cardiology's 70th Annual Scientific Session & Expo, two Edinburgh Imaging members, who were primary authors of single paper, received this award: Dr Evangelos Tzolos British Heart Foundation (BHF) Clinical Research Fellow & Current PhD student at the Centre for Cardiovascular Science Dr Jacek Kwiecinski Former PhD & MSc student at the Centre for Cardiovascular Science - PhD & MSc sponsored by the Polish School of Medicine Memorial Fund About the paper Image Dr Jacek Kwiecinski, former PhD & MSc student “Coronary 18F-sodium fluoride uptake predicts outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease” In brief: Published June 2020 in JACC 293 patients with known coronary artery disease. Post hoc analysis of data collected for prospective observational studies. Participants underwent 18F-NaF PET computed tomography 42 month follow-up for fatal or nonfatal myocardial infarction. Total coronary 18F-NaF uptake determined by coronary microcalcification activity (CMA). Findings: In patients with established coronary artery disease, 18F-NaF PET provides powerful independent prediction of fatal or nonfatal myocardial infarction independent of age, sex, risk factors, cardiac risk scores & coronary calcium scores. Collaboration: Cedars Sinai & the University of Edinburgh collaborate well in the field of cardiovascular medicine. Both Evangelos & Jacek have spent a year in Cedars Sinai Los Angeles as imaging research fellows, specialising on 18F-NaF PET-CT imaging. This has allowed them both to work on projects involving patients recruited in the two institutes & to create databases that will lead to future projects. Evangelos tells us his thoughts regarding receiving this award. “We are both really excited & honored to receive this prestigious award & we would like to thank our mentors: Prof David Newby & Marc Dweck from the University of Edinburgh, & Daniel Berman & Piotr Slomka from Cedars Sinai.” Relevant links Dr Evangelos Tzolos Dr Jacek Kwiecinski Professor David Newby Professor Marc Dweck American College of Cardiology's 70th Annual Scientific Session & Expo Journal of the American College of Cardiology Journal of the American College of Cardiology 2021 Parmley Prize Cedars Sinai Centre for Cardiovascular Science Heart / cardiovascular Coronary artery disease What is a PET-CT scan? 05 May 21.
