The European Crucible is a leadership and development programme for early / mid-career researchers from Scotland and Europe. Dr Adriana Tavares, Chancellor’s Fellow in PET imaging, received the ‘Audience Choice Winner’ for the 2022 Project Pitching Competition for her work in the Coral Reef Restoration and Bioengineering (CRABB) group. The CRABB group was assembled during the last European Crucible event and included marine biologists, statisticians, chemists, modellers and imaging scientists. This truly multi-disciplinary team put forward a proposal to restore coral reefs by using magnetic substrates. The proposal included a monitoring arm to assess coral health using different techniques, including PET-CT imaging of coral specimens. We asked Dr Adriana Tavares her thoughts on receiving this award. “It was really exciting to work on such an out-of-the-box project! Undoubtedly, scanning corals with PET-CT techniques will be challenging, but we love challenges and look forward to the next chapters of this multi-disciplinary project.” Relevant links Dr Adriana Tavares European Crucible What is a PET-CT scan? 07 Mar 22.
