Research focus

Dr Michelle Williams (MBChB PhD MRCP FRCR FSCCT) is a clinical lecturer in Cardiothoracic Radiology with the University of Edinburgh and radiology trainee at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Michelle's research centres around multi-modality non-invasive imaging of the heart and vasculature.

 

Educational background & past work

After completing her medical training in Edinburgh she undertook a BHF Clinical Research Fellowship and successfully defended her PhD on CT imaging of the heart at the University of Edinburgh. She was a research fellow for the SCOT-HEART study, a multicentre randomized control trial of the role of CT imaging in patients attending outpatient cardiology clinics. This work has been awarded numerous prizes, including the “BMJ Imaging Team of the Year” 2017 award.

 

Current work

Recently her work has been part of the research group’s success in being awarded the “Queens Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education”. 

Her research interests include CT coronary angiography, CT myocardial perfusion imaging, magnetic resonance angiography and molecular imaging of atherosclerotic plaque.

Michelle was recently awarded a Starter Grant for Clinical Lecturers by The Academy of Medical Sciences to continue the investigation of atherosclerotic plaque imaging with a state-of-the-art PET-MRI scanner.

 

Dr Williams is a member of the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging executive committee, trainee representative for the British Society of Thoracic Imaging and part of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography UK international regional committee.

She was also recently part of the organizing committee of the successful British Cardiovascular Imaging 2018 meeting which was held in Edinburgh.
