As part of the CMVM’s Research Insights series, Dr Adriana Tavares delivered a public talk on “Brain scanning – a lifetime in an image”. Dr Adriana Tavares is a Chancellor’s Fellow at the Centre for Cardiovascular Science, and Head of the Preclinical PET-CT Laboratory at Edinburgh Preclinical Imaging (EPI).The Research Insights series are free and online public events exploring the science and research taking place in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (CMVM).In Dr Tavares’s talk, she explains how an imaging technique called PET has improved over years which allows researchers to learn more about how healthy brains work and what goes wrong when a person has a neurological condition. Dr Tavares develops radioactive molecules that allow her to trace which parts of the brain are most active and when. Research has shown that our brains change throughout our lives. What Dr Tavares is learning has the potential to influence how brain conditions are treated and understood in the future depending on what PET images show. The talk is followed by a lively Q&A session with questions ranging from 'what does a career as an imaging scientist look like?' to 'will future brain scans let us see people's memories?'.
