Small vessels, dementia & chronic disease. Guest editors Professors Joanna Wardlaw (Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh), Karen Horsburgh (Centre for Neuroregeneration, University of Edinburgh) and Rhian Touyz (Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences, University of Glasgow) are guest editors on the recently released Clinical Science special edition on small vessels, dementia & chronic disease. Special edition This special edition includes critical reviews on several key topics from experts in the field as well as commentaries and primary research, culminating in a position paper on the status of experimental models and their relevance to research on pathophysiological mechanisms of cerebral small vessel diseases and vascular contributions to neurodegeneration. The collection complements a workshop held in January 2017, bringing together researchers in dementia and stroke to discuss the multifactorial mechanisms contributing to neurodegeneration acting around the complex vascular–brain interface, including models, their relevance and ways to ensure reliability. This themed collection was organised by the Vascular Experimental Theme of the Dementia Platform UK (DPUK) Professor Joanna Wardlaw, is leading the UK-wide dementia research programme in stroke patients. This DPUK study recently received £1.2 million funding by the Stroke Association, British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer's Society and Dementias Platform UK.
