Congratulations to Dr Marwa Daghem who received the Best Clinical Cases award at the recent European Society of Cardiology Congress. Image Presentation slide from “Takotsubo & SCAD, can they co-exist?” by Dr Marwa Daghem, presented at the ESC Congress. Dr Marwa Daghem, Clinical Research Fellow at the Centre for Cardiovascular Science received the Best Clinical Cases award at this year’s European Society of Cardiology Congress for her presentation, “Takotsubo & SCAD, can they co-exist?”. Marwa explains: whilst Takotsubo & spontaneous coronary artery dissection are two separate pathologies they can co-exist. Non-invasive imaging has an important role to play in clarifying the two diagnoses & monitoring recovery from Takotsubo. In this case, we used novel manganese enhanced MR scanning, as part of a research study led by Prof David Newby & Prof Marc Dweck, to show that, whilst there is often good recovery in left ventricular function, recovery in calcium handling, as depicted by manganese uptake, appears to lag behind. As such manganese imaging may be a useful tool for assessing the natural history of Takotsubo, & monitoring response to treatment in future trials. We asked Dr Marwa Daghem her thoughts on receiving the award. “I was very surprised, & honored to receive this prize from the European Society of Cardiology. This is very much a team effort & as such would like to thank both Dr Trisha Singh & Prof Nick Mills for their contributions.” Relevant links Dr Marwa Daghem Professor David Newby Professor Marc Dweck Professor Nicholas Mills Dr Trisha Singh European Society of Cardiology (ESC) European Society of Cardiology Congress Heart / cardiovascular What is a MR scan?
