Dr Wenwen Li, Research Fellow in a machine learning project for acute ischemic stroke lesions, will be leaving the University in early May. Image Dr Wenwen Li Dr Wenwen Li received a BEng degree in Software Engineering from Anhui University, China in 2008, an MSc with distinction in Operational Research from The University of Edinburgh in 2013, and a PhD in Computer Science from The University of Nottingham in 2018. Dr Li then worked as a postdoc in a Machine Learning Group at the University of Sheffield. Since September 2019, Dr Li has been working as a Research Fellow on an interdisciplinary machine learning project for acute ischemic stroke lesions, at the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, and which also involves the School of Informatics. Dr Li explains: We have been focusing on the application of machine learning (ML), especially deep learning (DL), to identify Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) in clinical practice. Due to difficulties obtaining clinical CT scans, and the lack of standard data processing pipelines, most modern ML methods are designed for MR scans, which are more accessible and easier to process than CT scans. In this project, we developed a data pipeline to process the CT data for DL algorithms, and designed a multi-task convolutional neural network for detecting the acute lesions on CT scans. Dr Li’s current research interests include deep learning, machine learning and data analysis with the applications to medical imaging. We would like to thank Wenwen for her work at the University, and wish her all the best in her future endeavours!
